Balloons Used to Contraband Tobacco Products Closed Lithuanian Airport
Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
